Leslie (my better half) is a hell of a writer. Her work has appeared in Strange Horizons, Daily Science Fiction, Adromeda Spaceways Inflight Magazine, and is forthcoming from Asimov’s (just to name a few). She’s no slouch. So, when she had the idea of writing a book of speculative fiction prompts, I was very excited to work with her on the project.
We’re an odd couple, so why should our writing process be any different? We wrote the book in the form of a very lengthy email conversation. Nearly every day, we would email one start (first sentence), one plot idea, and one writing challenge to each other. 100 emails later, we had a first draft. It was a really fun collaboration and I am inordinately pleased with the result. I really think this book is a practical, useful tool for writers of science fiction, fantasy, and horror. We don’t wax philosophical on the nature of the craft. We don’t preach the dos and don’ts of prose. We simply provide a tackle box full of useful bits and pieces to get the work flowing.
I am proud to have worked on it.
